CHAMPIONS CHALLENGE 2012
For the fourth year running, The Champions Challenge, our now traditional curtain raiser to the new season was held on Thursday 30th August, played at Windleshaw Club.
This year, the Fixture featured a return visit and a team debut in the challenge. Scala Snooker, who won the Division One Championship in 2011-12. They were up against East Sutton Labour 1, who returned to the league top flight by winning the Division Two title in 2011-12. The result is listed below:
A tale of one team dominating the match. Taking a big lead early on, and ascerting their dominance to clinch the biggest win in the challenge's history. The first 2 frames really set the tone for the match, with Scala taking a massive 120 point lead in the aggregate scores. Under 25 Champ Kieron Semmens had been victorious over Shaun Magennis, but it was an outstanding frame from James Burgin winning for Scala with a 90 point margin, including a 30 break for good measure.
A Man of the Match performance from Aaron McCann for East Sutton gave them slender hope with a win over Scala captain, Andy White. But normal service was resumed with Scala taking a 3-1 lead as Adam Chorley won his frame over Warren Fenney by 27 points. This gave Scala a massive 140 point aggregate advantage too which seemed enough for victory
An excellent performance was completed by Damien Gauchwin and Rob Rigby as they took victories over Anthony Porter and Bill Fyles respectively. Indeed, Rob came back from a 46 point handicap start with Blue, Pink and Black to win. Victory was Scala's in resounding fashion!
Scala captain, Andy White received the trophy for his side from League Secretary, Dave O'Dowd, to complete an excellent night of quality snooker and give our new season the perfect start it deserves.
Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing who will shootout in the Champions Challenge 2013...!
