Now into it's 6th Competitive Year, The Champions Challenge, our now traditional curtain raiser to the new season was held on Thursday 28th August 2014, played at Windleshaw Club.
This year the Fixture featured a 4th consecutive visit and another team debut in the challenge. Scala Snooker 1, who retained the Division One Championship for the third consecutive year in 2013-14 arrived to play in their 4th match in a row and looking for their 3rd win. They were up against Sdiac Social 2, who returned to the league top flight after a lengthy absence by winning the Division Two title in 2013-14. The result is listed below:
Only once in the past has this match been a one-sided affair. This year saw a first for the competition in the fact that no team had suffered a whitewash defeat....until now! The first 2 frames saw Scala Snooker start with Kevin Gauchwin and Derek Hornby who continued to open the match like many of their successes last season. They played Jim Rigby, a 30+ year veteran of the league and his son Phil Rigby from Sidac Social 2
A Man of the Match performance from Phil Rigby gave Sidac 2 the perfect start with an excellent potting performance win over Derek Hornby. This second game was much closer and went down to the final pink and black but it was the veteran Jim Rigby who won his frame over Kevin Gauchwin with the last two balls to give Sidac an excellent, if unexpected, 2-0 lead.
Sidac debutant Mark Bradshaw and Matt Houghton were next up for them. Scala, in their unfamiliar position in these matches went with their big hitters in Damien Gauchwin and Adam Chorley to try and get them back into the match. Mark showed he could more than hold his own against Adam's onslaught and bravely fought his way to a black-ball finale in their frame. Despite several missed attempts and safety shots it was Mark Bradshaw who got the crucial pot to give Sidac a 3-0 lead!. This turned out to be a decisive moment as Matt Houghton took advantage of miss after miss from Damien Gauchwin to win his frame comfortably and effectively end the match!
The last two frames were not required as Sidac 2 had an unassailable 4-0 lead so hands were shaken and Peter White and Phil Rigby received the trophy with his side from League Secretary, Dave O'Dowd, to complete an excellent match and give our new season the perfect start it deserves.
Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing who will shootout in the Champions Challenge 2015...!
