For the third year running, The Champions Challenge, our now traditional curtain raiser to the new season was held on Thursday 1st September, played at Windleshaw Club.

This year, the Fixture featured two new teams. Huyton Constitutional, who won their first Division One Championship in 2010. They were up against Scala Snooker, who returned to the league by winning the Division Two title in 2010. The result is listed below:

A tale of one team taking a big lead, only to be hanging on after a spirited comeback is the best way to describe the game. The first 2 frames were shared between the teams, with Huyton taking a tiny 5 point lead in the aggregate scores. Debutant Lawrence McClintock had been victorious over Adam Chorley, with Rob Dagnall winning for Scala with victory over John Tait.

A Man of the Match performance from Alan Dodd for Huyton gave them the lead as he overcome a big handicap start to beat Kieran Semmens, icluding a fantastic 54 break in his frame. This lead soon became 3-1 as apink and black for Chris Raynard meant he won his frame over Stu Barrow by just 1 point. This gave Huyton a 50 point aggregate advantage too which at the time seemed enough for victory

What they didnt count on was a brave and feisty comeback from Damien Gauchwin and James Burgin as they took victories over Jay Willetts and Peter Shaw respectively. Indeed, James could have won the match by just 1 point by clearing Blue,Pink and Black. He got 2 out of 3 but a tremendous pot on the final black by Peter gave Huyton victory by the narrowest margin!

Huyton captain, Peter Shaw received the trophy for his side to complete an excellent night of quality snooker and give our new season the perfect start it deserves.
Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing who will shootout in the Champions Challenge 2012...!
